IN THE HOUSE – ‘Shame on those who desecrated sacred places’
Statement by Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Frank Caputo in the House of Commons on Monday, Jan. 31, 2022:
Mr. Speaker, I watched with horror on Saturday when a very few protestors disrespected and desecrated the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I condemn these actions unequivocally. The people who did this missed a clear point, which is that the unknown soldier, and all of those who served this country, served so we could have the very freedoms we enjoy today, such as the right to peaceful assembly and the right to free speech.
That is why the use of Nazi and other racialized symbolism is so repugnant. Our soldiers fought against those things, both literally and metaphorically, so we as Canadians could be free, and that freedom was abused by the actions of a few.
I visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier this morning, not just to remember, and not just to give thanks, but also to beg for forgiveness for any time that we as Canadians have forgotten that freedom was not free. I thank those who laid flowers at the tomb and at the Terry Fox statue, and I say shame on those who desecrated sacred places this weekend.

MP Caputo does not speak for me on most issues, but he certainly does on this one! Well said.
Not only that Mr. Caputo but great shame to your party leader for showing support and sympathy to those irresponsible and reprehensible anti-vaccine who are laying siege to our capital city. Hopefully people will take note.
Hmmm carefully threaded his way thru this.
I saw another report before where he didn’t answer directly whether he ‘supported the protest or not’, but answered by hoping everyone stays ‘safe and respectful’ … and now this.
We might finally have an MP that doesnt jump straight on the Conservative rhetorical bandwagon (cough … Cathy … cough) and considers and curates his statements carefully and intentionally.
Nice to see … time will tell.
