Dear Residents of Sun Peaks
I appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding following yesterday’s municipal update regarding the confirmed positive case in Sun Peaks and keeping the name confidential during the initial period. At this time, we would like to provide updated information regarding this case for the interest of the community. We can confirm that Dr. Chip Bantock has received confirmation that he has contracted and tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday night, March 20, 2020.
We had chosen to keep Dr. Bantock’ s name confidential immediately following the positive test results to give Dr. Bantock the opportunity to contact all patients that may be at risk, to discuss the situation with them directly and appropriately assist them with any fears or anxiety upon hearing the news, rather than through social media or the local grapevine. Dr. Bantock has taken this action. Please be aware he has contacted all patients he feels might have been exposed both personally and professionally. If you have not been contacted by Dr. Bantock you are at no greater risk than you have been to date. That still means social distancing!
We have reason to believe Dr. Bantock was unfortunately exposed through his work as a medical professional, while still practicing all measures to limit potential exposure. Due to our limited knowledge of this disease it is impossible to know when and from whom exactly Dr. Bantock contracted COVID. Which emphasizes the need for everyone to be vigilant and assume that everyone has the virus.
To this end, while this is one confirmed case, we want to ensure that everyone is aware of the risk of exposure, no matter where you are. You MUST practice social distancing, wash hands constantly and practice all other measures as recommended by the health experts. Due to the limited number of tests available, formal testing is currently limited to active medical professionals, hospital in-patients and long-term care residents. Thus, there are most likely many cases of COVID-19, including here in Sun Peaks, that will not be recorded as an official confirmed case in the updated numbers we hear every day.
You must be responsible for your own behaviors through this time and assume that you can be exposed at any time while in public and not self-isolating at home – as this is the reality.
The diagram (above), The Power of Social Distancing, has been circulated on social media and is a very good demonstration of how we can all work together to flatten the curve.
We would like to emphasize again that all patients who are thought to be at risk have been contacted at this time. The Sun Peaks Health Centre remains open for telephone consultations during regular clinic hours, Monday to Friday (10:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-4:30pm) via 778-644-0635.
Dr. Bantock remains in quarantine at home, with his family, and is feeling better daily. He will be returning to regular medical practice once he has been cleared.
Dr. Shane Barclay
Medical Director, Sun Peaks Health Centre
