If you leave your vehicle on a street downtown overnight you’re not going to have to pay. The title of the article is misleading.
What most people who don’t live downtown don’t know is that there are now two new apartment building on St. Paul and one of them offers one spot per unit, the other one we aren’t sure yet. One impark lot on St. Paul is already torn apart to make way for yet another apartment building. We can’t assume the couples and families that move into these buildings can live with just one vehicle.
To put it into perspective, I was paying Impark $75 a month to park in the dirt lot on 5th and St. Paul and only needed it for overnight/weekends. That lot is now the location for affordable housing within the next couple years so I think the forward thinking to create spots for those couples/families when they get home from work/school is a great idea and more council members should be trying to fix problems before they happen instead of waiting for the fires to start.

High density residential where most people feel they need to have a vehicle can sure create some difficult to solve situations. Top that with the need for others to access daytime services and shopping nearby and the problem of parking becomes even worse.
What’s happening downtown is a pigeonhole approach to development, one without a solid plan to harmonize all the various elements. Continuing to put the wrong people in charge and problems will pile up.
