Residents lobby City to help save Stuart Wood
NEWS — Two neighbourhood associations will approach City council on Tuesday in hopes of gaining support to maintain Stuart Wood elementary.
The recently formed Downtown and West End Residents Association and the Sagebrush Neighbourhood Association will appear as a delegation to drive home their concerns about the City-owned heritage building.
Kamloops-Thompson school board is expected to decide whether to close the school at its last regular meeting of the school year on June 23. School board chairwoman Denise Harper said earlier this week that trustees may opt to defer the decision until they meet with the City.
No formal discussions with the City have been held to date. Denis Walsh, a member of DWERA, said money would have to be spent to upgrade the building even if the board decides to close the school.
However, DWERA believes maintaining the school is in the best interest of the downtown core.
“For a thriving community downtown, we really need an elementary school downtown,” he said.
DWERA is holding a public meeting on Wednesday, June 18, at Desert Gardens to discuss strategies and fundraising ideas for saving the school. The first portion of the meeting at 7 p.m. will involve association bylaws. The Stuart Wood discussion begins at 7:30 p.m.

Of course money will need to be spent one way or another. Therefore it is even more baffling as to why council nor city management have not taken a strong position yet.
Does it have to do with lack of desirable qualities like leadership and doing what is right over what is convenient? Just saying…
