POLICE – Stolen property, obstruction, breach charges for Kamloops man

A recent report of a suspected mischief in progress led Kamloops police officers to arrest a man for a series of alleged offences.

On Sunday Aug. 18, 2024, around 7:35 p.m., Kamloops RCMP were called to Curlew Road for a report involving a person with a screwdriver and a truck. Police checks confirmed the truck in question had been reported as stolen from Cammeray Drive two days earlier.

“While officers were investigating, the truck left the parking lot and police continued to follow it onto Lorne Street, where it was abandoned by its driver and a foot pursuit was engaged,” said Cpl. Crystal Evelyn.

“With the assistance of the Police Dog Service Unit, a suspect was taken into custody shortly after.”

Kirklen Gregory Petkau-Desjardin, 29, of Kamloops is facing six charges for offences including possession of stolen property over $5,000, obstructing police, prohibited driving, and failure to comply with a court order.

He was held for a bail hearing and remanded into custody until his next court appearance, scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2024.

Anyone who has information related to this investigation and has not yet spoken with police, is asked to do so by contacting the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and referencing file 2024-27063.

  1. Thank you for highlighting the criminal activities taking place in the city with the highest crime severity index in all of Canada.

To any individuals considering moving to this city, think twice. Crime, drug addiction and homelessness is completely out of control. It’s highly visible in comparison to other surrounding communities.

The local news and Facebook feeds are all you need to see in order to realize how bad things are here. And I mean BAD. The situation in Kamloops is jarring in comparison to other local communities. It’s highly visible and they keep building flop houses in the community.

Kamloops also has the second highest municipal tax rate of all BC cities.

Save yourself the misery of moving to a community ran by a council that claims the crime here isn’t a problem.

Considering opening a business here? Don’t. You will experience multiple break ins per year, glass breaking and continuous disorder. If you try to speak to council nothing will improve.

Considering visiting here? Don’t. The downtown core is full of crime, drug addicts carrying weapons and human excrement.

This used to be a city where you could raise a family in peace. Now if you hike around local trails you will be chased by a knife welding drug addict. And better yet, no one will do anything about it.

Did I mention the gang war? Organized crime has set up shop and are shooting each other in the streets. Why are they here? Kamloops has become a regional hub for drug addicts. Lots of customers here.

The caring citizens of the community have tried for years to get city council to take this seriously and do something, but they refuse. So have the businesses. But nothing changes. Council won’t even ask questions or demand improvements. So heed these warnings and don’t end up in a place like this. This is no longer a safe place.

Avoid this city like the plague. The situation is beyond the capabilities of the meagre council to deal with. It’s like watching people lost at sea on a dinghy. Floating aimlessly and incapable of changing course.
