Kamloops residents have a chance to experience some of what it will mean to have a new Performing Arts Centre at an event Monday, July 29 (2024). Called the Build Kamloops Celebration of the Arts, it will take place on the proposed site for the centre.

“Our team is putting the finishing touches on the event, finalizing the entertainment, artists, interactive displays, experiential activities, and food and beverage vendors,” said Dušan Magdolen, the City’s cultural services and events manager.

“We’re very excited to highlight the many possibilities for arts and culture as well as other events, shows, and ceremonies the proposed Kamloops Centre for the Arts will be able to offer. We want to show residents how the proposed arts centre will contribute to a long-lasting legacy that benefits everyone in our community,” said Magdolen.

The event will be held July 29 from 5 to 7 p.m., at 393 Seymour Street, the former address of the Kamloops Daily News. Entry is by donation.

Proceeds from the entry donations will go to arts group partners, said Magdolen.

The adjacent Kelson Hall will be open for any attendees needing relief from the outdoors.

The Build Kamloops Celebration of the Arts will feature:

•    live music, including a quartet performance by the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra
•    entertainment, including a hip hop performance by Let’s Move Studio
•    interactive displays, including a Kamloops Film Festival Experience Zone featuring a red-carpet photo opportunity
•    experiential activities, including an all-ages Musical Play Zone by the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra and the Kamloops Music Collective
•    a public address from local dignitaries past and present
•    food and beverage vendors (including beer, wine, and coffee)

  1. Will there be a free skate with entertainment etc to promote the new rinks included in the AAP? With maybe some plans (even if they aren’t $6million plans)?

Perhaps there will be. Roller skates (do any have their own “red wheels”) might be allowed. Holding hands to keep steady on the tight corners is only allowed in closed meetings, Bronwen.

Chairman Mike and the committee will have the folks who live on the street pushed out of sight and out of the way for this event.

No matter how they try to dress it up, it’s still the wrong location.  Does Chairman Mike think the folks in Sun Rivers need to pay some of the costs over the next generation of people who will be paying for this?  Does he think the folks in the TNRD should be on the tax hook as well?  How about our Indigenous brothers and sisters (who will first be acknowledged for this proposed project being on unceded ancestral lands of the Secwepemc Nation) ?

Chairman Mike; there will be live music and performances by different people and groups but no representation from the Secwepemc Nation. What gives?

Some folks already know that I have expressed my disappointment this is not a joint venture that should be located across the South Thompson River in a place where there will be full access for people for years to come.  Chairman Mike, it’s either a “together thing” or maybe it’s best that it shouldn’t happen at all.
