IN THE HOUSE – ‘Violent offenders get cable, a canteen, and a beautiful gym’

MP Frank Caputo.

MP Frank Caputo continues his focus on murderers Paul Bernardo and Luka Magnotta during Question Period on Thursday, April 18, 2024.

 Frank Caputo (Kamloops—Thompson—Cariboo, BC)

Mr. Speaker, after nine years of the NDP-Liberals, offenders like Bernardo and Magnotta are living better than many Canadians, with cable, a canteen and a beautiful gym. This is at a time when Canadians are having trouble when it comes to heating, eating and housing. This is breaking news. The correctional officers’ union tells us that crime is thriving, not on the streets but in jail, with drones dropping drugs and serious weapons.

When will the Liberal government realize that violent offenders should not have access to these things? Who is running corrections?

Dominic LeBlanc (Minister of Public Safety)

Mr. Speaker, my hon. friend knows very well that the safety of the men and women who work in the correctional service is of paramount importance to the government. I have met with representatives of the union. I talk to the administration at Correctional Service Canada often about what steps we can take to give it the technologies and the tools necessary to protect the people who work in our correctional system.

We will always do everything we can to keep these institutions safe for the brave women and men who do this difficult work for Canadians.

  1. Soo … problem number 1;
    Even though Conservative federal governments were in power for over a decade since Bernardo’s conviction … we didnt see them do anything about the issues raised here, or any attempt by the Harper government to turn our federal corrections facilities into cesspool dungeons … doesnt matter … i forgot its always only the fault of the government you’re trying to beat in the next election, and you have a Conservative party leader to suck up to.

    and problem number 2;
    Even though so many of your convoy loving base certainly will appreciate the rhetoric, the reality is, if ANY government turned out federal corrections facilities into cesspool dungeons … it would come back to bite them for a range of reasons, like from civil rights lawsuits to the simple fact that once you make offenders swill in the cesspools muck for a few decades … you by law have to release them into society. Now you have a population of very angry and unsociable people dropped outside the gate. Great idea … if recidivism is the ultimate goal.

    And you’re complaining about a canteen … it depends on the definition of canteen you’re on about – it is either like a store, where they can buy razors to shave and soap … or literally a kitchen, where people … you know … eat. So you want everyone to have beards down to their knees and smelly … or you want to starve them to actual death. Which is it?

    Question for Mr. Caputo – how would you solve the drone problem? Would you tell guards to shoot them out of the sky? So, when they miss the bullets fall in school playgrounds? How does that work? Seriously, instead of just complaining, whats the solution?

    The reality is, unlike what Mr. Caputo is suggesting here … the PM’s office has nothing to do with on the ground issues at corrections facilities. Its a federal department with federal government oversight, which doesnt really mean much as its run by corrections professionals and career bureaucrats. Mr. Trudeau is not actually attaching fentanyl to drones himself.

    • Seriously, that’s a great reply to a not so great diatribe…actually an embarrassing one. Thinking that he passed law school and worked as a crown lawyer…

  2. Some jails in BC are having 8-9 drone sightings per day. Drone jamming equipment exists, but sadly progressive leaders seem to encourage criminality at every step, and are loathe to impose consequences, so the drones continue to buzz around, dropping weapons and decriminalized drugs for the inmates.

    Perhaps Mr. Caputo would like all our convicts to be in chains in dungeons.

    • Not only that, but let’s bring back the chain gangs and put these offenders to work for the communities they terrorize and prey on. If you’re happy with the progressive approach to crime and justice, we just need to install a few more revolving doors to meet demand.
