McQUARRIE – New president has a Knaak for moving chamber forward

I RECENTLY MET up with Joshua Knaak, the new president of the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce and for those who follow this column on a regular basis, you know that Mr. Knaak and I have in the past, occasionally bump heads.
At times we’ve disagree not so much on the need for Kamloops to continue growing business and employment opportunities but on the method and maybe even occasionally, on the type of businesses that fit with the Kamloops of the future.
Even when we disagree though, I’ve found Mr. Knaak’s arguments to be thoughtful and above all else, in what he feels are in the best interests of our City.

In Bill McQuarrie’s piece about the President of the Kamloops Chamber he ponders whether the future of Kamloops will be one as a resource city. I would suggest that that option has long since passed. When you consider the City, Regional, Provincial and Federal government facilities, the University and schools, the hospital and clinics, the Courthouse and jails, the RCMP and National defence, ICBC and the liquor outlets, the Kamloops Indian Band and other First nations institutions and many other taxpayer supported facilities, I think that one could easily make the case that Kamloops future will be as a government city. As well, these tax payer supported enterprises support much of the private sector activities in Kamloops.

A government town? While a stable and well-functioning government is desirable, the creativity and dynamical attitude of private enterprise should not be in a secondary role, Nelson!

I would want my business to join the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce, except I am not sure they accept humanists there.
