ROTHENBURGER – The free ride is over; media outlets need tax dollars
An ArmchairMayor.ca editorial by Mel Rothenburger.
I’M SO VERY tired of listening to the Blame the Media game day after day.
How easy it is to lay a guilt trip on mainstream journalists for every problem, big or small, because it relieves us of taking any responsibility ourselves.
Maybe it makes us feel better, too, about wanting our news for nothing. Well, the free ride is over and we’ll have to open our wallets to keep afloat the very media we so love to disparage, if we want to guard our Canadian values, lifestyle and democracy.

As more and more news outlets are being swallowed up by huge ( And profitable ) conglomerates, that reduce the experienced news staff , and replace them with inexperienced staff, take advertising money from the big political parties, then just report those party’s press releases as news, show us cute animal videos, and not much else of anything serious, you want our tax dollars to support them ? Wow ! That is so far off base as to be laughable Mel. Our tax dollars already support the CBC, and what do we get in return ? One sided reporting of the news, and mostly unwatchable programming.

Radio NL and CFJC-TV are doing well and not going away anytime soon, but in a way they should. What were you saying about journalistic integrity?
