LETTER — Keep recycling until strike is over
LETTER — I just attended a BBQ hosted by the striking workers at the Emterra recycling plant in Valleyview.
One of the messages brought home to me by the speakers there was that we should be stockpiling our recyclables during the strike rather than throwing them out with the garbage. Citizens should do so for a number of reasons. Firstly, we will want to recycle whatever we have to stockpile eventually. Secondly, we do not want things that can be recycled to end up in a landfill contributing to green house gases in the atmosphere. Finally, the workers currently striking at Emterra will, hopefully, be back to work, and when they are, they will get the benefit of being paid to work with our recyclables.
Hopefully, the strike will not be long-lived. In the meantime, we can continue to do our part to help improve the environment.

If the workers are being paid as poorly as has been reported, and if it would take such a small amount to bring them up to a living wage, why has the City not “leaned” on the Company to make this happen. I would assume the Company has a pretty lucrative contract with the City.
There are a great many of us who do not have a lot of extra space to stockpile their recyclables, so I am not sure how much of that will happen.
