Public to vote on arts centre Nov. 7
NEWS/ ARTS — Kamloops residents will vote Saturday, Nov. 7 on whether to borrow $49 million to design and build a performing arts centre with an underground parkade.
City council picked the date today (Tuesday) on the recommendation of staff via the project’s steering committee, which ruled out various other possibilities due to the federal election, statutory holidays and weather.
Three possible questions were considered, with this one being chosen: “Are you in favour of the City of Kamloops borrowing up to $49 million to design and construct the parkade and performing arts centre complex.”
While the actual cost may alter, $49 million is the maximum amount that would be borrowed for the local share. Additional funding would come from senior governments. Including a $25-million parkade, the project is estimated to total $90 million.
There was little discussion around the council table on the date and wording, but some questions on the details of polling stations. Staff will bring back a report June 16 with options on the number and location of stations, and what they’ll cost to operate.
They said the cost of running the referendum will probably be between $130,000 to $160,000, based on the cost of recent elections.
Loan authorization and voting-day bylaws will also be ready for council consideration in June.

I agree with the above comments that we the tax payers should not pay for the ” Milobar Manor” AKA performing arts centre. Lets invest the dollars to have the city clear the snow windrows in the driveway entrance…

The cost of the referendum should be fully and completely funded by the major and friends.

Absolutely Pierre. Peter M is the driving force behind this quest to leave himself a legacy project behind when he goes, so he and his supporters should pay for it.
