Authorities are investigating the shooting of 17 wild horses north of Walhachin.

The Tk’emlups rural RCMP detachment says police received a report Friday (March 10, 2023) that some dead horses had been found. The forensic identification section, an RCMP livestock investigator and a veterinarian went to the scene to investigate.

The detachment said in a news release the shooting is “disheartening.” The horses are believed to be part of a feral herd that has roamed the area up and down the Deadman Valley for decades.

“The motive behind this disheartening act cannot be confirmed at this point. However, investigators will continue to collect and examine everything available,” the news release states.

“It is acknowledged that these horses are of cultural significance to the local Skeetchestn Band.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Cpl. Cory Lepine at the livestock section, 250-299-7462 or cory.lepine@rcmp.grc.gc.ca.
