POLICE – Memorial plaque for three RCMP constables stolen from cairn

Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for a plaque stolen from Peterson Creek Park.

On Monday July 26, 2021, around 9:32 a.m., the Kamloops RCMP Detachment received a report that a memorial plaque had been stolen from Peterson Creek Park.

The brass plaque was in memory of three Kamloops RCMP constables who were killed near the location on June 18, 1962: Elwood Joseph Keck, Gordon Eric Pedersen, and Donald George Weisgerber. The officers were shot and killed while responding to a call involving a man with a gun.

“For someone to deface and steal a memorial honouring constables who died while trying to protect the residents of this community is really sad, it’s shameful to say the least,” said Kamloops RCMP Superintendent Sydney Lecky.

“I can’t imagine how the families of these constables, and of the countless other constables who risk their lives on behalf of this city, must feel knowing someone would steal a plaque recognizing their sacrifice.

“Someone knows what happened to the plaque,” he added. “Please do the right thing and return the plaque to the Kamloops RCMP or the Peterson Creek Park.”

Anyone with information on this theft, or the whereabouts of the plaque is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2021-25646.
