LETTER – One good way to keep pedestrians safer: clean your headlights

(Image: Mel Rothenburger)

Regarding pedestrian – vehicle incidents, there’s one simple, free activity for vehicle owners. It’s not a complete solution but it’s a place to start.

Clean your headlights. It’s surprising how little grit it takes to dim your lights. Check them when you walk out in the morning. Check when getting gas; if you’re cleaning your headlights and tail lights, check the vehicle behind yours and clean if necessary. They’ll smile and thank you. Check your headlights before you get in to drive home from work.

If your vehicle is older, look into upgrading the bulbs. Check to see if the plexiglass is faded and scratched. If it is, buy a buffing kit or go to one of the shops that offer this service.

There are lots of other ways we need to deal with the pedestrian-vehicle problem but making it easier to see hazards is immediate and cheap.

  1. I think an even quicker way to keep pedestrians safer is to slow down to the speed limit, respect yield lights, stay off the personal communication devices and realized pedestrians are indeed extremely vulnerable. Oh, and keep the licence plate area clean so I can see the numbers and report to authorities if needed.
