POLICE – Body of man drowned two years ago in North Thompson found

The body of an Alberta man who was last seen being swept away in the North Thompson River two years ago has been found.

Stan Cappis and a friend had been at the river near the Tournament Capital Ranch on July 12, 2024 when they jumped in to rescue two youths who had slipped off a sandbar.  The friend and the two young people made it to shore but Cappis was taken away by the current.

Despite search efforts by Kamloops RCMP, Police Dog Services, Air Services, Forensic Identification Section along with Kamloops Fire Rescue and Kamloops Search and Rescue, Cappis wasn’t found.

“On July 16, 2026, remains found were positively identified as the human remains belonging to Stan Cappis,” Cpl. Dana Napier said today (July 23, 2026).

“In consultation with family members we are releasing his name to the public given the high level of engagement from the community in their continued efforts to look for Stan.

“We hope this discovery can bring a small amount of closure to family and friends.”

Kamloops RCMP called Cappis a hero and offered condolences.
