Slate set in Kamloops for federal election

NEW/ POLITICS — The slate is all but set in the Kamloops-Cariboo-Chilcotin riding for the 2015 federal election after the federal Liberals picked their candidate Saturday night.

BallotTeacher Steve Powrie will carry the banner for the Liberals against incumbent Conservative MP Cathy McLeod and the NDP’s Bill Sundhu.

Powrie defeated marketing consultant Niki Remesz for the nomination in what is believed to have been a tight race, with both candidates actively lining up support for the past several weeks. The voting tally wasn’t released.

Peter Mutrie dropped out of the nomination race due to a family illness.

Powrie and Remesz spoke to party members in TRU’s Hall of Learning Ike Barber Centre before the final voting started, but members were also able to vote in advance during the day.

    I am not a member of any political party, but I was a student of Steve Powrie, and know his reputation well. He was the best kind of person when I knew him. He was bright, caring, energetic and yet, he was idealistic and hopeful.

    I sure hope we replace Cathy McLeod in the next election. I am sure she is nice, but I am so tired of pablum! I want an MP who can and will speak on my behalf!

      Late reply is better than no reply I suppose, was just going through some older stories.

      I was in the room as the votes were counted, it’s quite standard that the final tally is not released in a nomination race. The end total was close, but Steve did cleanly win the vote. Both candidates had scrutineers in the room during the counting as well.
