Proposal for new trail alongside Yellowhead gently set aside

NEWS/ CITY — Kamloops City council wrestled today with how to say “maybe but not now” nicely, in the end gently setting aside a proposal to build a $2-million recreational trail between the Halston Bridge and the Tournament Capital Ranch.

A community group called the High 5 Committee has proposed the 14-km. section of trail, which is envisioned as a multi-purpose path running alongside Highway 5. However, a staff report says a feasibility study would cost about $50,000 and is likely to remain low on the list of priorities in the City’s trails master plan.

Council was worried that even officially receiving the report might send the wrong message. “Before we consider including it in our master plan I think we need to have a public input session,” said Coun. Marg Spina.

“We need to hear all sides of the picture.” She pointed out that the Rivers Trail, built at the turn of the new century, was originally designed to loop onto Tk’emlups Indian Band land but the band backed out of the project part way through due to concerns by its members.

Parts of the proposed new trail are also proposed to cross TIB land.

Mayor Peter Milobar said receiving the report wouldn’t bind the City to acting on the proposal and it’s likely a long way off. “Unless I’m mistaken we have no money in our budget for this,” he said. “I think everyone needs to calm down a little.”

“It does not look from my perspective that it’s going to be feasible,” said Coun. Ken Christian.

Coun. Arjun Singh agreed that “this is a very low priority” but he didn’t want to discourage anyone from coming up with ideas, especially if the community committee is able to raise money towards the project.

Council decided to receive the staff report for information, and staff will continue to consult with the committee.

  1. Good grief ! Only in Fruitloops could there be such hand wringing over how to just say no, there is no money.
