NEWS/ CITY — Sprucing up the Tranquille Road corridor could cost close to $7.5 million.

A task force has been looking at possibilities for the route from the Kamloops Airport into Brocklehurst ever since an estimate of $24 million was broached for a higher-end beautification plan last fall.

Now, the task force is looking at a two-step project that would cost about $4.9 million from Airport Road south to the corner of Tranquille Road, and $2.4 million from the corner to Crestline Street.

As with the original plan, the biggest cost would be relocating hydro lines.

At a recent task force meeting, members discussed developing a wish list to put to City council and working with tourism Kamloops on signage.

The plan calls for a roundabout at the exit from Tranquille Road to Airport Road, and the task force will now look at artwork for the roundabout.

“The cost for signage needs to be a realistic figure,” minutes from the meeting note.

  1. Devers and her pet committee keep beating on this drum in the hope that if they make enough noise, it will come to pass. Lyman is right, we need a smarter council. Everything they let city staff go to work on ends up massively over budget, and soon forgotten when the next big pie flies into the sky. I heard that there was a beautification project in the area of the Red Bridge once upon a time. In all the time that I have been here, I have never been able to figure out exactly where that might have happened.

Take a look at the “beauty” at the west end of the on/off ramps to the Overlander bridge.
Overgrown/half dead plants and full of weeds. Much public money lay to waste. Byron McCorkell and staff will tell you that they are monitoring/treating the area. David Trawin will smile and nod. Council will just approve another one. And the cycle continues unabated, unchallenged. Somebody is wrong, but who’s wrong? Not me for sure.

This city needs a smarter council first, everything else is secondary. A “beatification” project from the city today equals a big waste of money in just a few years. Plenty of examples are available to the keen observer.

  3. Really, we are upgrading Tranquille Road at the Airport with a beautified roundabout, when there are so many other roads in North Kamloops that could use upgrades and roundabouts to slow down traffic. Definitely shows where city’s priorities lie.
