One of the Kamloops RCMP detachment’s police dogs is retiring for undisclosed medical reasons. Neeka will transition to retirement at a family home in Kamloops, RCMP said today (July 16, 2026).

Born in 2020, Neeka graduated from the Police Dog Service Training Centre in Alberta before joining the Kamloops detachment in 2021.  She also served on the Southeast District Emergency Response Team as part of her duties.

“Neeka is retiring due to medical reasons and will join the Neds Wish program supporting medical needs into retirement,” said Cpl. Steve Prior, police dog service handler for Neeka.  “We will be celebrating all of Neeka’s great work with her favourite treat, a bagel.”

Neds Wish is a grassroots program that covers medical expenses for police dogs after they retire.

Arlo, a prospective “recruit” is attending training camp and may fill the vacancy Neeka leaves behind.

Neeka’s specialty has been narcotics, tracking and searching. Although weighing 65 lbs. — light for a police dog — that fact didn’t deter her. On one occasion, she located a suspect who was hiding under a trailer after fleeing from a stolen vehicle.
