LETTER – Intent to run is not the same as getting your name on the ballot

Lots of people are in the news lately sharing an early intent to run for local government. But having an intent to run does not mean their name will actually be on the final voting paper. Right now, it is just an early announcement.
To officially run for mayor, city council, or school trustee, everyone must clear the exact same legal HURDLES at City Hall:
• THE 4:00 PM DEADLINE: The real test is September 11 at 4:00 PM. If a person does not hand in their paperwork and financial forms by that exact minute, they are out.
EXPECT DROP-OFFS: Getting on the news with an early intent to run is the easy part. In almost every Kamloops election, 1 to 3 people who make early announcements end up dropping out before the campaign even begins.
Until City Hall checks the paperwork and shares the final list after September 11, nothing is official. Follow the news for now, but wait until mid-September to see who is actually running.
Make sure you vote on October 17, 2026.
Thank you,
JIMMY JOHAL
