EDITORIAL – When wearing guns around town is everyday ‘normal’

THE FATAL SHOOTING of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis is an outrage that will resonate throughout the U.S. and the world for a very long time. Outrageous because an American citizen was, in effect, executed by law enforcement officers.
Outrageous because the Trump administration has done its very best to demonize the victim and create a different reality. Anyone watching the videos of the shooting surely can’t believe the official version of events.
But an outrageous reminder, as well, that the U.S. exists in a universe that is entirely foreign to the values we enjoy in our own country. One could say, values enjoyed in any democratic, civilized country. But down there, they’re killing their own people.
It has been noted in news coverage that Pretti was carrying a firearm, which was removed before he was shot.
But that coverage has also taken pains to explain that Pretti had a legal right to carry that firearm, that it was “normal.” In some places, including Minnesota, you can even legally carry a gun at a peace protest. How on earth is it normal for people to carry around guns in everyday life in a community?
It is, of course, part of the American gun culture to do so. Imagine if people walked down Victoria Street in the Tournament Capital openly carrying sidearms?
Unbelievable.

The right to own and bear arms is there for a reason. The difference between Canadian and American gun culture is that in Canada, the criminals carry the guns and you’re mostly defenceless as a law abiding citizen. In America both criminals and law abiding citizens carry guns. In Canada you’re more likely to get charged defending from a home invasion than the person doing the invading.
A further point. America is threatening to invade. Maybe Russia will show interest. Imagine a populace like ours having any chance of resisting a foreign invader when we have such timid and ridiculous gun laws?
Make all the laws against firearm ownership you like – criminals don’t follow the law and that should be no surprise to anyone.
ICE cowboys killed that innocent man. Bad training killed that man. Imagine ICE on a larger scale and you can exactly understand why the US Constitution celebrates firearm ownership by citizens. It’s for the very reason you saw on those Minnesota streets.

listening to US government officials justify his murder because he was carrying a legally permitted firearm is a little rich. So, USA government is saying that guns are now the problem. The right wing MAGA must be very confused.

Just as an aside there actually are people carrying guns down Victoria Street.
Some are well know to police but somehow they have a constitutional freedom to do so! Unbelievable!
