COUNCIL – Outdoor skating rink to be shifted slightly to the west
The outdoor skating rink planned for Riverside Park is set to be moved to a slightly different location.
Civic operations director Jen Fretz will ask City council at its regular meeting Tuesday to make the switch to a spot just west of the originally planned location at the kids’ water park.
Fretz says in a report the new location won’t cost any more than the $5.4 million budget, which will come from the City’s provincial Growing Communities Fund allotment.
Much of the space at the new location is hard surface and asphalt, so less than 30 per cent of the footprint would impact existing green space, she said. It’s also slightly largely than the original location, at 1,850 sq. metres compared to 1,750.
Assuming council rubber stamps the change, staff will proceed with detailed design and construction. The new location won’t require closure of the water park during the build.
The project itself was approved last April.

When they built the waterpark didn’t they also include infrastructure that could be adapted to an ice rink in the future? Yes! So the money spent on this infrastructure, which was twice turned down for grant money by the province because it was deemed frivolous, is this now wasted money? Since admin were determined to build this rink and drew plans for this specific spot they’ve now some 2 years later changed their minds and have decided on a new adjoining spot and the hell with the money already spent, what’s changed?
It wasn’t that long ago that this same admin decided it wanted a indoor pool at McArthur Island, so they tore down the well built Boys and Girls Club building as that was where they had planned to build the pool and McDonald outdoor pool because nothing like artificially creating a necessary need. The only problem was that after these were torn down council decided not to vote in favour of a new pool. So the city spent an over a million dollars tearing these 2 assets down with nothing in return. Brilliant!
When are we going to get an independent review of of this administrations competence?

Pretty soon the green space in Riverside park will be reduced to little.
And the venerable old trees will disappear, impacted by all the back and forth of heavy equipment stomping without guidance on their roots.
