LETTER – Lack of a seniors centre in Kamloops is an absolute disgrace
Our Seniors Center in Brock closed in July. There are a few places where some services are available to seniors, at Heritage House, Cottonwood’s, and Desert Gardens. At present there is no real Seniors Center in Kamloops. This as an absolute disgrace to the 30,000 or so seniors in who live and worked here.
Kamloops is the only city in B.C. without a Seniors Center. As citizens, we have paid taxes, we volunteered for events and we are generally good citizens. We deserve a place to go to, to socialize, get meals, hold card games and bingo, hold dances, and provide information for seniors. It needs to be centrally located, where good bus service is available for seniors who no longer drive.
Many seniors are lonely because they live alone. Some seniors do not prepare meals for themselves any longer. At the Brock Center they could pick up frozen meals to take home for only five dollars. They could socialize, have a cup of coffee, meet other seniors.
Please bring this important issue out in the open. As Armchair Mayor on CFJC and Facebook, please bring this to the attention of the mayor, city councillors and the people of Kamloops. Hopefully, it will stimulate interest, further discussion and action to make a new centrally located Seniors Center a reality.
We deserve this. What could be more important?
CAROLYN FISHER

I concur. To have no Seniors’ Centre in a city the size of Kamloops is a disgrace. Many smaller towns have a seniors’ centre – and we should too.

We don’t have anywhere for seniors to gather? Sorry about my ignorance on this matter but I would like to know more about it.
