LETTER – Access for public safety vehicles at Moira House an issue

(Image: John Noakes)

It’s time for a taste of reality when it comes to an issue of public safety regarding Moira House.

When Moira House was being built, I met a fellow who was in the area, on Rivers Trail, watching the construction workers “doing their thing” at the end of Kingston Avenue. He was a used car salesman….let’s call him “Reece” to hide his identity.

I can remember talking to him about access to Moira House, especially in the event of a “code 3” response involving the fire department, ambulance service and RCMP. We both agreed that in the season where recreational vehicles use the Sani-dump at the end of Kingston Avenue, there are times when there is a long lineup and it can be tough for the drivers of recreational vehicles to go to and from the Sani-dump.

The Sani-dump is paid for by tax dollars and is an important service for people to deal with their sewage and “grey water”. The Sani-dump has been there for as long as I can remember.

Both “Reece” and I had made it clear to elected folks before Moira House was opened that access for public safety vehicles could very well be a problem. There is one way in and one way out. Adding to the equation is that Moira House is enclosed by a chain link fence 8 feet high. There is also only one access point for the first responders into and out of the fenced enclosure.

I have attached a couple of photos that I took the afternoon of July 3, 2023. There are vehicles parked on the street along Kingston Avenue. This is perhaps “overflow parking” from Moira House.

A picture is often worth a thousand words. Obviously, they are words that seem to have fallen upon deaf ears.

That used to be our favorite walk and bike riding. Have not been there since that place opened. It is a shame Kamloops has become a dumping place for Bums. Don’t blame new Mayor & Council.

  2. After this housing unit went up, a number of extremely concerning events happened in the neighbourhood, including the medieval stoning of pedestrians and cyclists under the nearby bridge and they made their way along the trail, a needle disposal at the children’s park, and a home invasion in Westmount. Pedestrians along the trail are also subject to video surveillance from cameras at the Moira House.

I am exasperated at the state of the community, and the collective shoulder shrugs from Council and Bylaw at the daily happenings; as if any of this is normal.

This entire city is now a sani-dump. Flush the whole lot I say.

  3. Too often good words fall upon deaf ears in this locality. There is little accountability through and through for elected representatives and the ensuing management team. Being on council is mostly a popularity contest.
