LETTER — Is everyone out there over 40 living a lie with the metric system?

I think you might start a landslide or maybe an avalanche — or how about a revolution (“Editorial — Metric is a failure; let’s go back to the old old Imperial system”)?

A sign road for a speed limit to sixty

Remember when we used to know what this meant?

I’ve been struggling with this Imperial to Metric for 20 years … and I didn’t think I was stupid, but now I’m beginning to wonder if I’m living a lie! Is there anyone out there over 40 who is fully Metric?

Is it just because we were over 40 when the change was forced on us? Would it truly hurt the economy to run with both systems or would that ‘cost’ too much?

Isn’t the fact that all those over 40 seem to be caught in a ‘dread’ zone with this, except for those who remember 50 mph give you 80 kph … Hmmm?

Good question!

  1. Well Camille,I don,t want to join globalism and the rest of the world and I,ll stick to my opinion and Nixon,s opinion of Pierre.Hopefully his progeny will be an improvement over the old man who never did a lick of work in his life.It has nothing to do with the dark ages. It,s about what THE PEOPLE,like the Brits want, not what the New World Order,a concept that will never happen, wants.Get rid of the Rose coloured glasses. They make it difficult to see reality.

  2. Ask any kid in school how tall he is or how much he weighs.Almost always you will get the answer in feet ,inches and pounds. In Great Britain they still use stones ( 14 lbs ). Many grocery stores use per lb and Real Estate folks soon went back to acres and sq.feet.Litres we,re stuck with at the gas pump and highway signs are in Kilometres. I still convert to miles for distance and own several old vehicles with MPH speedometer in which I convert to klics so,s I don.t get a blue one.
We were in the store business at the time of the beginning of the great failed experiment,a time when one was afraid of jail if you didnt cooperate with the burocracy.
It was all instigated by a not of the people snob who disliked Americans and who stated it would be good for for foreign trade.Us older folk remember what Nixon referred to him as. An,it started with an A. Well that could well have been but it was a pain in the butt when you needed two sets of wrenches to work on your car.
There.s 350 million people to the south of us on real measurement and I think it,s going to be hard sell in Appalachia.

Beside the U.S. only three other countries have not adopted yet the Metric System: Burma and Liberia. The move for Canada to adopt the system was not instigated by snobs who disliked Americans. Where the hell did you get that info? Adopting the Metric System was a move forward to join the rest of the world, and you want to go back to the dark ages?

  3. Yes, I am living a lie, I newer know how tall a person is until I see them, I never know the temperature outside until I go out and feel it, I simply cannot absorb the metric system, I bake with an old set of measuring spoons, I bake from OLD cookbooks…………I hate it, help.

  4. Travelling at 50 km per hour, an object in motion travels about 45.6 feet per second.
Try doing scientific calculations (with a slide rule, pencil & paper) using the metric system and powers of 10 versus the archaic Imperial system. It won’t take you long to realize how much better the metric system is.

Try Morse code; it’s a language of sounds that once learned, stays in your mind. When watching a WW2 production in black and white, people will generally ask “what did they say” when Morse is heard in the background. Any of what I have heard appears to be in cipher, which makes sense.
