Airport entrance could be the place for next roundabout as part of Tranquille upgrade
NEWS — The entrance to the Kamloops Airport could be the place for the city’s next roundabout.
The concept is part of discussions on a possible first phase of a gateway enhancement concept being discussed by a civic committee. The stretch of Tranquille Road from the Kamloops Airport through the hairpin corner will likely be the first phase of the gateway project.
The Tranquille Road corridor is being looked at by the committee. which was was formed after City council balked at a $24 million price tag for a deluxe upgrade presented by staff.
Coun. Nelly Dever says the committee figures there should be four phases to sprucing up the corridor, which is viewed as the priority gateway project because it’s the first thing people experience when they fly into Kamloops.
The other phases are expected to be more expensive and will require more public consultation.
The committee has also talked about working with Communities in Bloom, Tourism Kamloops and Kinder Morgan.
Ideas under discussion include painting the Suncor oil refinery tanks and cleaning up the area, doing something about Hydro poles, and enforcing unsightly property bylaws.
The committee will also look into the costs of tree planting, signage and sidewalks in the various phases.

Are we back at this? Please! Like the eastern entrance corridor into Valleyview which was enhanced during Mayor Mel’s tenure, it will be another exercises in wasting money. Get the property owners to smart-up by enforcing existing bylaws and pick-up the garbage twice a week. These simple suggestions can be implemented quickly, much more cheaply and will “enhance” the area immensely.
