MESSAGE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE CHIEF

Kúkwpi7 Rosanne Casimir, on behalf of Chief and Council, wishes to advise Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc membership that individuals associated with Second Sons Canada, a group linked to white supremacist and white nationalist ideology, have been seen and documented within our community.
The presence of individuals associated with white supremacist and white nationalist activity in our community is deeply concerning and is being taken seriously by Chief and Council. We recognize the fear, anger, and concern this may create for our members, Survivors, families, and staff. We hear those concerns, and we are taking action.
The safety and well-being of our members is our priority. Our people have the right to feel safe in their homes, in our community spaces and throughout our community.
We are actively monitoring the situation, assessing additional security measures, and working with the RCMP. A police file has been opened regarding this matter, and we will continue to take appropriate action.
With the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation approaching on September 30, we recognize that the presence of individuals associated with this group may heighten concern, particularly for Survivors, Intergenerational Survivors, and their families.
The presence of individuals associated with white supremacist ideology on Tk̓emlúps lands will not deter Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc, Indian Residential School Survivors, Intergenerational Survivors, or their families from continuing to share the truth, honour the children, and advance the work of truth, accountability, and reconciliation.
White supremacy will not instill fear in generations of Survivors and Intergenerational Survivors who have already carried fear for far too long. Our people know what it means to live with fear imposed upon us by others. Yet we also know the strength, resilience and courage of our Survivors, families, and community members. We have endured fear, and we will not be intimidated. We stand together, day after day and generation after generation, to ensure that this history is never repeated.
September 30 is a day for our community to come together to honour Survivors, remember the children who never returned home and support one another. As we prepare for the day, we are taking additional precautions and remaining attentive to activity in and around our community so that members can gather safely.
For your safety:
– Remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings
– Do not approach, confront, or engage with members of this group
– If you observe suspicious or concerning activity, report it to the RCMP immediately and reference Police File 26-32569
– Call 911 if there is an immediate threat to public safety or an emergency situation
– Maintain a safe distance and allow law enforcement to respond as required
– Avoid speculation and rely on official updates from Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc and the appropriate authorities
Please continue to look out for one another and check in with our Elders, Survivors, families, and neighbours who may be feeling concerned.
White supremacy, racism, and hate have no place in Tk̓emlúps. We will continue to stand together, protect our people, uphold the truth, honour the children, and ensure that history is never repeated.
We call on the Governments of Canada and British Columbia to uphold their responsibilities and take meaningful action to combat racism, white supremacist activity, hate-motivated conduct, and efforts to deny or distort the truth of the Indian Residential School system. Reconciliation requires more than words. It requires ongoing action to ensure Indigenous peoples can live safely and free from intimidation.

It is disturbing that fascism is on the rise around the globe. It is openly exhibited in Alberta and the U S. Here in B.C it is a bit more subtle but it is here. Democracy takes effort. At the very least we have to get out and vote.
