CULTURE – City and TteS say ‘ancestral remains’ have been found in West End

‘Ancestral remains’ have been found in Kamloops’ West End, according to a joint announcement today (July 27, 2026) by the City and Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc.

However, no details of the find are being released, and the public is being asked to avoid the area, even though no specific location has been announced.

The statement said the finding was reported to police by a member of the public on July 15.

“Out of respect for the community, the ancestor, cultural protocols, and the ongoing process, no additional details are available at this time,” TteS stated on its website.

It did now say how it’s known that the remains are ancestral.

Kúkwpi7 Rosanne Casimir stated, “The protection of our cultural heritage is a fundamental responsibility of Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc. Our people have lived throughout Secwepemcúl̓ecw since time immemorial, and we remain committed to ensuring our heritage, cultural laws, and traditional practices are respected.

“We will continue to uphold our inherent jurisdiction and Secwépemc values while working collaboratively to protect and preserve our shared cultural heritage. We appreciate the collaborative efforts of all those involved in supporting this important responsibility.”

She said the City and RCMP were “quick to communicate” with TteS about the discovery.

The undisclosed area is closed “and we request that the public and media avoid the area to allow Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc and the City of Kamloops to complete this important work.”
