EDITORIAL – How council jumped at latest excuse to shelve public inquiries

An editorial by Mel Rothenburger.

AL KOEHOLIC is, no doubt, having a good chuckle over Tuesday’s council meeting in which the latest ridiculous decision was made to suspend public inquiries. Again.

Al, as we’ll call him, submitted a request to speak under new pre-registration rules put in place by council in an effort to curb behaviour they don’t like. Obviously, there’s no such person as Al Koeholic. It was a silly joke, and unproductive given the history of the public-inquiries issue.

Somehow, though, Al ‘s application to speak sailed through administration — which is supposed to vet these things — and made it onto the agenda. Temporarily, anyway.

When it came Al’s time to speak, no one stepped up to the podium.

That’s when Coun. Margot Middleton stepped in. Middleton began her rookie term being an ineffective councillor who didn’t seem to understand basic Robert’s Rules of Order, the guide for running public meetings. Over time, she’s transitioned from ineffective to anti-effective. Technically, there’s no such word as “anti-effective.” You won’t find it in the dictionary but it’s more accurate than ineffective, which doesn’t quite describe Middleton at the moment.

Anyway, so yesterday (May 28, 2025), she successfully moved that public inquiries be shelved once again because of the “abuse” of process by Al Koeholic. Time is needed, she said, for staff and the government services committee to further review the situation and decide what to do about avoiding such incidents in future.

In Middleton’s words: “This will give us time for this to go to committee for the committee to have the time to review it….”

Why? Why abolish public inquiries again on such a paltry and illogical excuse? How about staff simply use common sense in disallowing registrants that exhibit obviously fake names. If need be, add a procedural clause requiring that names be capable of verification.

To their credit, Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson and Coun. Dale Bass demonstrated logic and common sense by voting against Middleton. Logic and common sense, however, aren’t exactly consistent commodities around the horseshoe.

  1. this is even better than I thought it would be. I would be lying if I said I didn’t love the drama this all produces, in abundance. In the absence of leadership at least we are thoroughly entertained, even if it’s rage farming. This city is so cooked.

  2. I know Al. He’s a good man and he deserves a second chance. I am pleading with Coun. Middleton to reconsider the motion and bring back public enquiries. I’ll make sure Al is there for next week if you do.

    Thanks.

I think it was really offensive for Katie and council to not accomodate Al and call him out the way they did. He is clearly struggling with substance abuse and probably wasn’t able to make it into council chambers to speak after a hard night of drinking at the local wet facility.

  5. Outclassed, outsmarted and outdone by a 15 year old Bart Simpson skit. The brainiacs down at city hall are really earning those high salaries!

Lots of pearl clutching and “abuse” claims being thrown around again. Please. Being made to look like the fools they are is not abuse. How many employees worked for how many hours to set up this new system, only to have The Bartman strike at the first opportunity.

Too funny. Just let the public speak you hyper sensitive busybodies.

That pretty well sums it up, Denny.

Are some of the ones from the horse shoe heading to Ottawa for a conference this weekend?  If so, let’s hope the story of poor Al has not preceded them.

On a different note, what might this level of competency suggest to the scrutiny applied to the AAP for the PAC and Multiplex projects?   Just saying……..is Al even on the voters list for Kamloops?  We might not have heard the end of poor Al.

Our city council would do well to take a look at the lawsuit filed against the City Of Whitehorse for infringements of speech. To their credit, they fixed their error in the bylaw and the lawsuit was recently dropped. It is pretty foolish to think that someone in the political sphere would be offended by someone who disagrees with them.

    • Poor Al indeed. I poured a little bit of beer on the curb for Al before I took a swig. Everyone down at the local 12 step is really upset. Council didn’t even bother to accommodate Al. They didn’t even try and meet him where he’s at. And to delete his name off the agenda like that made him feel like he doesn’t exist. All they did was increase the stigma. Why did they cancel public input for the rest of the year instead of asking city staff to grow a brain? Why did they blame the mayor when all of council received the advanced agenda and didn’t say a thing about Al. Al is considering his next steps after what happened.
