CITY HALL – The mayor of Kamloops gets his office back

Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson can once again work in his City Hall office whenever he wants.

The mayor confirmed today (May 2, 2024) that he has been given round-the-clock access through the side (east) door a few steps from his office.

“I’m back in business,” he said. “I can work 24/7 again.”

Senior administration had barred him from the building after business hours, so he was no longer able to go in to work during evenings or on weekends.

The door is the one I asked about during a video-taped interview with the mayor last week for Politics Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo. It allows access to City Hall without the need to go through staff-only areas.

Acting CAO Byron McCorkell and civic operations director Jen Fretz had said banning access by council members after hours was necessary to ensure the safety of staff members.

Hamer-Jackson said he received word of the change of heart in an email from Fretz yesterday.

  1. Them directors may be realizing that their silly-o-meter has peaked out and any further measures could be measure-up as historically stupid.

So I guess the city is now liable for any injuries, attacks or harassment (including any non-sanctioned bouts, wrestling matches, arm wrestling challenges, pistol duels, fencing, and slap fights instigated by those with after-hours access).

I wonder what changed as far as the threat assessment done by obscene six figure Byron McCorkle? Didn’t they say they’re trying to protect the tax payers from lawsuits arising from the above?

    • I wonder if he is allowed to have anyone else over to play in his sandbox outside of normal business hours?
