EDITORIAL – Why was another ‘council’ photo taken without the mayor?

A short editorial by Mel Rothenburger.

ONCE AGAIN, Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson is left out of a photo of ‘Kamloops council.’

The above image showed up on my X/ Twitter today showing eight smiling councillors in front of City Hall. Where’s the mayor?

Was he not available? Was he simply left out? Either way, it doesn’t matter.  His absence is so obvious that the photo’s message is hardly subtle: “here we are, eight happy councillors getting the job done without the mayor.”

Shameful. When will they stop?

  1. This comment won’t get posted because I say no to the mayor and NO to Mel. He only publishes comments that align with his way of thinking. Legacy Mel, legacy.

This might surprise you but beginning a post with “this comment won’t get posted because” doesn’t guarantee it will get posted. Being respectful and relevant does.

Look what Alberta just announced. The UCP is going to try and take control over municipal affairs. Should be interesting going forward .

    Shunning.

That’s exactly what has been happening with Reid being the victim.  Religious denominations use shunning as a form of cruelty to distance a person emotionally and socially.  Its damaging effects cannot be ignored.  People have been destroyed by it.

This entire bunch has been involved from the start.  There are others involved who are not in this photograph.

That this could happen in the 21st Century in Canada is beyond belief.  This treatment is a clear violation of Reid’s charter rights.  I call upon our MP Frank Caputo to become involved and present this case in Parliament in Ottawa as soon as possible.

  4. Stupidity is defined as behavior that shows a lack of good sense or judgment. Rather than take the high road, the “hateful 8” continue to take the low road and with it a loss in voter support. The citizenry already dislikes this council and all this does is give them more reason to dislike them.

I shamefully admit to helping one of these get elected a few years ago. It’s one of the biggest regrets that I hold.

        I feel your pain.

Myself and others of my close professional and friendship circles enthusiastically endorsed at least 1/2 of them at the most recent election – including 2 of the incumbents.

Now, there is MAYBE 1 (Margot) of the entire crew that I would ever consider to support again – and I know I am not alone. Massive disappointment.

Their behaviour has been unprofessional, arrogant and blatantly rude since their inauguration.

Biggest disappointment (in order): MO, KN, BS, SK, KH, NB, DB, MM.

Interested to hear where others place their order.

  6. Truly shameful and very disrespectful. Lower than low.

“The general rule is that if you are purposefully excluding someone because you know it will upset them – that is bullying behaviour. You must understand the impact your actions or words will have on someone else and this must form the main reason for using those words or actions.”

    “Example of Social Exclusion:

    • Leaving someone out on purpose when you know they will be hurt by your actions”

  7. This is legitimate bully behaviour. Purposeful exclusion/ignoring is a tactic used by childish grade school cliques.

    • I was thinking the same thing. Not to malign young women of a certain attitude, but the councillors are acting like the mean girls group at school.

I really feel bad for the Mayor. I couldn’t imagine having to deal with the kinds of retrograde behaviour on display by the childish clowns in this photo. They appear to truly have no shame. I can’t imagine being so ignorant as to not comprehend how this looks to people.
