FEATURED COMMENT – One citizen’s failed attempt to do something nice
This item was posted on the Kamloops Citizens for Change Facebook page by Lyle Blomquist:
I am a horrible human being, a true danger to public safety! What is it that I did that was so egregious to cause public complaints and Community Service Officer attendance?
I got tired of seeing our poor Canada Post letter carrier having to sit on the ground on her mail bag to have a break and wait for mail to be delivered to the drop box across the street from our home. I had brought camp chairs over for her to sit in when I did see her, but I am not always home nor do I want to watch my camp chairs walk away at the hands of some of Kamloops finest.
I used my own time and energy to provide her a place to sit like a human being. I was able to find the bench in the picture and I placed it beside the mail box for her.
Yep, thats it! So horrible, so unsafe, so egregious that a public complaint was made and two Community Service Officers attended to remove the safety concern. I made a call to get feedback as to what I did wrong and what I could do right in the future.
Long story short, there is nothing I can do. It is not permitted to leave anything on City property without permission. I can try to ask the city to install one, but then you get the political answers if we would then have to install them at every delivery box and the cost to have them installed would be too much.
This leads me to my open discourse to any type of politics. A working class member of the community was trying to care for another working class member and do something to help make their life easier. At the same time Dr Bonnie Henry is encouraging people to be kind and just one block from my home some of Kamloops finest have errected a camp on City property and it is ok.<
My question is how? How do politicians spew bullshit rhetoric and still feel good about themselves? How does a City say you’re a tax payer doing something kind for another tax payer but that is a risk to public safety? How do the people who contribute nothing receive far more than they contribute? How do the people who contribute nothing have their own set of watered down rules? How do politicians not understand that what they turn a blind eye to says far more than what they address ever will?

HI. Lyle. And another note about doing something nice. Our finest is now baby sitting adults. Spend a whole bunch of dollars to provide an overpass for the students of the university. It appears that our finest (and this includes the university management) considers these adults incapable of managing their safety. Just remember that every elementary school student doesn’t need this baby sitting service. Otherwise every school in the city would have an overpass. Westsyde road is the exception. And that other nice thing that the gang of eight is doing! Spending our tax dollars to build an arts center that was not wanted. No wonder there is a substantial tax increase. After all there is not a problem “of the homeless in Kamloops”.

I feel the same way. There is a walkway from our street to another for community members to go which the city put in. I moved to this street address in 2021. In the Spring of 2022 and 2023 I have cleaned up debris on this walkway, filling six black bags. I had no way to dispose of them, as I am 88 years old, and they were heavy. I dragged them into our yard then called the Community Services to see if they would have a City employee with a city truck pick them up for disposal. The young man who answered the phone told me he wasn’t sure but would ask his supervisor and get back to me. The supervisor called and said they didn’t do that. Of course I won’t be cleaning the walkway this year. City of Kamloops telling us they appreciate the citizens who help keep the City clean. B—S—

Donna, this is an excellent post. When a citizen voluntarily aids in cleaning up the city, whether they are 88 or 28, the city ought to be encouraging this and helping out. I strongly encourage you to send a note to the mayor regarding this issue.
