Re: The perfect way to waste money – Summit pedestrian overpass

Thanks Mel for your article on the “Summitt Overpass”. I agree – total waste of money.

Another total waste is $900,000 to improve the rarely used walkway on Westsyde Rd between 8th and Allview.

Council has really bought into the “city machine” with these projects and others like all the new firefighters rather than making best use of the paid on call guys. We need to be able to vote on these projects in a referendum.

Paying down the debt would have been much more beneficial to us taxpayers.

Keep up the good work.

You are so right in your criticism. Since I moved here 4 years ago I often walk downtown using Summit Dr. from Hwy 5A. Every time I walk past Sahali Elementary I just shake my head at the ‘Vanity Project’ that was the ‘improved’ sidewalks from the highway to the Elementary school. What about the $2,500,000 that was spent to widen the, two lightly used sidewalks. Couldn’t that money be better spent putting sidewalks in Brocklehurst where none exist? Yes I am a senior with mobility issues and I am disgusted with the lack of decent sidewalks in this city. Was city council high on something when this decision was made?

i am torn in opinion… do we spend the money to do this and quite likely save the life of a student who makes a poor choice to jaywalk, not go the half block to the light controlled crosswalk and possibly dies .. or spend it to pay down a debt that will only rise again in the near future?? ?
