PETERS – Trading Tourism Kamloops visitor centre for Jeep a head scratcher

TOURISM KAMLOOPS has done a lot of great marketing for this city over the years, but a decision it made this week should raise some serious concerns from the local tourist-dependant sector.The visitor centre located off the Trans Canada Highway will be closed to the public this summer, in favour of a Jeep and trailer rig.

The Jeep will roam the community, park in strategic locations and offer information and promotional opportunities to those who can find it.

This is a classic case of fixing something that is not broken — or finding a problem that does not exist.

   Agreed. a mobile welcoming center is a roving, moving target. Sounds like someone with a Jeep and an expense account sold a bill of unpredictable goods. Welcomes are best delivered at the point of entry.

   This makes absolutely no sense. Many years ago I ran the Info Centre in Maple Ridge, which was not a hub of events. People stopped in for directions, suggestions of what to visit throughout the area and province, and for where to stay information. Those who stop need to be able to find a brick and board location, or they will travel to where they can find one (Salmon Arm?)
