COVID-19 – City announces additional service closures

Update today (March 23, 2020) from the City of Kamloops on COVID-19.

The City of Kamloops has made a number of service decisions today including the closure of City play structures, the closure of some services at Barnhartvale landfill, and the shift of City employee workforce to minimal services.

“The Emergency Operations Centre is in constant contact with the Province, ensuring our decisions are in line with provincial direction and are in the best interests of our community,” said Mayor Ken Christian. “We understand how these measures effect our residents and how unnatural this all feels, but we need your cooperation.”

City Staffing
Effective immediately, the City has shifted employee workforce to minimal services, with a large part of the City workforce now working from home. The Emergency Operations Centre is working with Managers and Council to identify a staffing plan going forward.

Landfills
Effective March 24, the Barnhartvale landfill will be closed, with the exception of diversion and yard waste. Please take waste to Mission Flats Landfill where customers can charge to their account or use credit/bank cards. All landfills with the exception of Barnhartvale are operating as usual.

Public Spaces
The closure of play structures was announced in a separate release this morning. In addition to these closures, signage is being installed at all City parks, skate parks, and courts today indicating the importance of social distancing.

The City has been in regular contact with School District 73 about daycare for first responders, City play structure closures and other common initiatives.

Transit
BC Transit is tentatively working to have Kamloops transit on summer service hours as of April 1..
