WHAT’S UP DOWNTOWN – Bike maintenance and you

IT’S TIME FOR SOME FUN in the sun in Downtown Kamloops. That means it is time to get active and enjoy the fresh air.

Now that those blue skies are finally here you don’t have to wait forever for the car to warm up. So, stretch those legs and hit the trails. Of course, before you hit the road you need to be prepared, so today we bring you some tips on bike maintenance to help keep you on track and stable on those two wheels.

The first tip we have for you is knowing the ABC’s of your bike. The “A” is for air. Having the proper amount of air in your tires will make for a much smoother ride so it is important to check before you embark on an outdoor adventure. If you need a quick pump up, there is a bicycle maintenance station at Riverside Park and at Third and St. Paul Street just outside of Urban Systems.

The “B” stands for brakes. Kamloops in general has tons of hills, so make sure your brakes are in order before you blast off down the hills.

The “C” is for the chain. Having a clean chain will be highly beneficial for the overall wellness of the bike as switching gears properly on all those hills will really help those jelly legs afterwards.

The second tip is cleanliness. Keeping your bike parts properly cleaned and lubricated is crucial for good performance. Lubrication protects moving parts from excessive wear caused by friction, prevents them from “freezing up,” and helps keep rust and corrosion at bay.

Careful not to over lubricate as this can attract dirt and other abrasive particles. Many videos can be found online how to properly clean, but just remember that a few minutes here and there will save you hours of frustration down the line.

The last tip we have is more about you than your bike. In order to keep smashing all those personal bests, your body needs to be operating at maximum efficiency. What better way to keep your body happy than by staying hydrated? The CAP Team certainly knows the benefit of that.

Remember some of the signs of dehydration are dry skin, dizziness, dry mouth, and feeling tired or sleepy. If you are looking for a new water bottle and love Downtown Kamloops (of course you do) then why not swing by the Bank3, 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament and snag yourself a Downtown Kamloops branded glass water bottle for $20?

There you have it folks, a few tips to keep yourself and your bike in impeccable condition this year. Be smart and safe while riding, and enjoy the many trails that Kamloops has to offer. Don’t forget to pack that sunscreen too.
