EDITORIAL – Any ideas on how to beat the porch pirates?

An editorial by Mel Rothenburger.

THERE’S A NEW kind of crook on the streets. Not violent necessarily, but dangerous nonetheless. It’s the kind who has no conscience, no compassion, no decency and no guts.

These are stealth crooks, glorified pickpockets, who take from others when we aren’t looking. They’re creeps.

They began by ripping off all the bronze plaques from public art installations and memorials at Riverside Park and elsewhere around Kamloops.

Christmas is a time when such criminals go into high gear, stealing displays from people’s front yards, though it must take an especially resourceful brand of felon to find anyone to sell them to.

And, of course, they’re always on the lookout for unlocked cars.

And now, we have the porch pirate.

  1. Idea? Purchase an exterior-mounted garage door remote control and set up a temporary one time use password for the delivery company.

  2. A radio shack,as it once was,Infrared beam that sets off a piercingly loud siren such as we have on our burglar alarm, It would wake the dead and the neighbours, A Rottweiller ,a Pit bull,A big Doberman,an overly aggressive Chihuahua, a steel lock box perhaps and as an an added touch that nicely tightly gift wrapped box of aged, ripe dogss–t, marked fragile. handle with care. May contain nuts.A big doghouse turned sideways so you can,t see in. A 12 guage loaded with saltpeter would be good but unfortnately is not allowed because the perpetrator migh be an off duty underpaid cop.In this world you never know.

  3. How are the stats on the bite car program? Something similar with hidden cameras may need to be set-up randomly in neighborhoods with the help of the police. Then, with the help of the courts, the thieves getting caught need to be punished…but how? Forced labor? Community service? Time in jail? Neighborly beating? Maybe the thief needs a decent paying job…or the willingness to find a decent paying job. It sure gets quite complicated the moment you start “tearing” at the issue…
Maybe a bolted down security box disguised as a flower pot that can be code-opened or fob opened…a business opportunity I better start a patent-pending process right now…
