LETTER – City should postpone January parking-fee increase for one year

The Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association (KCBIA) is dedicated to a vibrant and livable Downtown that is the focal point of Kamloops. The organization provides value to members through advocacy, beautification, promotion, development and preservation of Downtown Kamloops.
The KCBIA is requesting that the City postpone the January 1, 2018 $0.25 per hour parking fee increase.
When this increase was put into the Bylaw in 2013, there were expected timelines and outcomes that have not been realized yet. The meter installation saw some delays so at our request the first slated increase was deferred for one year and we appreciated Councils’ cooperation.
Considering the lack of newly created long term public parking, receiving timely and relevant information on our current downtown parking situation and the negative public perception regarding parking Downtown, the KCBIA is requesting that City Council defer the slated January 1, 2018 increase for one year, until a study has been completed, or creation of long term parking.

Guess that they have to pay for the new Dome or maybe the city still needs money to pay for the parking lot. Seems like a big hole in downtown Kamloops. By the way is it going to be called the Hillside Dome?

If there are any “public money” available I would want other things beside parking in the downtown.
Even an outdoor skating rink should be a priority over creating more parking downtown…or better bus stops to entice more public transportation usage. Because if you do work downtown and a briefcase is your only “tool of the trade” then public transport would be a wonderful way to get down there. As a consumer I do not see a shortage of parking. What would make a difference (for the better) though, is a unified parking protocol with unified rates throughout the downtown.
