ROTHENBURGER – I have seen Trumpland, and all is not lost
I HAVE BEEN to Trumpland, and have returned safely to the bosom of my own country.
It was relatively painless. America is much the same, in many ways, as when I lived there 50 years ago. Back then, of course, it was a different war (Vietnam), a different president (LBJ), and draft dodgers rather than Third World refugees who were fleeing across the border into Canada.
Americans are still friendly, though not necessarily polite…

” Only in America” I have spent much time in the States.I used to fly my old Waco biplane down there regularly to fly-ins and airshows. I,d land at Bellingham, clamber out of the old bird and report in at customs in the flight center.” Hi Bob,where you heading” “Olympia” I,d say. “Have a good flight” they,d say Out I,d go,set the brake and the throttle, give it a couple of shots of primer, prop the engine and off into the blue horizon. In those not so far away days i sometimes flew over the mighty battleship,The Missouri, tied up in a mothball fleet at Bremerton. Other times over Renton at 2000 ft.up behind Seattle until I got to Roy.You always found Roy. The name was painted in big letters on the roof of the railroad station, all same 1930,s I,m sure it still is.I,d cut across the corner of Fort Lewis and land at my friend Mark Hoskins grass strip at Lacy.. He was a wonderful person and loved flying and all of his many flying friends, many of whom were Canadians.
Those halcyon days are of course over. 9/11 ended them.Very sad.I have flown commercially as a passenger through LAX since and have never been bothered by any unpleasantness. That goes for the rest of .any part of the country I,ve been through.
I never did have a radio in that aircraft. Now you need a letter from Rome, radio,s, transponders, encoding altimeters and lots of paperwork. Much like having a well ,a vehicle,a cow and pretty soon a horse in B.C.
Yessiree Melvyn we have seen the best of times. BG
