LETTER – Taxpayers should have been asked about sale of seniors’ facilities

The issue of problems with the quality of care in senior facilities has been widely reported in the last year which has been confirmed by the Senior Advocates Reports.

anbangAs a result of these reports, the citizens of B.C. have been expecting some news of improvements concerning staffing levels, enforcement procedures and enhanced training.

But instead, we have been informed that the Liberal B.C. and federal governments have approved the takeover of Retirement Concepts senior facilities by a foreign company that has been reported as having a “murky ownership structure and no experience with senior care”.

The investigation into Anbang has found that this company’s interest is in acquiring Canadian land, not in the structure that may be upon it. Recent negotiations with China by Christy Clark and Justin Trudeau are common knowledge.

Whether selling our land to the Chinese is a good move or not is debatable. But there can be no doubt that selling the care of our seniors to a foreign country is not. This takeover will put China in control of 10 percent of residential care beds in B.C. Would the taxpayers of B.C. approve of this takeover? Who knows? The Liberal government didn’t bother to ask.

  1. ” .Cathy McLeods,s remarks in Parliament on nursing homes were dead on. ”

Yes, her statements Are right on, but they mean nothing because the Cons aren’t in power any more. And when the Cons were in power, they were first off the blocks to try and sell everything they could to the Chinese. McLeod is nothing more than a big hypocrite.

  2. Selling our country to the Chinese is not a good idea.It has been happening for some time The 15% tax on foreign buyers in Vancouver is a bad joke. There should be a 25% annual tax on the thousands of houses in Vancouver that are empty. These people are turning Shaunessy, and other neighbourhoods as well, into slums. The whole scene is out of control and the present mayor and council of Vancouver should have done something long ago.Cathy McLeods,s remarks in Parliament on nursing homes were dead on.
