I GET an e-flyer regularly called Trends Journal. This small piece was one of several items offered in the first publication of the new year. It speaks volumes. It is reprinted by permission.

collins-colhedRIP: The Fourth Estate: The daily newspaper is on its death bed. Will the mainstream media at large live or die? No longer the people’s protectorate, tanking public trust and shrinking financial resources have limited traditional media’s influence on the public.

The Fourth Estate — the unofficial fourth branch of government designed to hold powerful people and institutions accountable — is no longer the domain of the mainstream media. What will replace it?

  1. Unfortunately the CNN comment and the local reporting when a major train derailment occurred (near Ashcroft) is what happens now,
    We must search out for ourselves the NEWS.
    As long as there’s beer in the fridge and hockey or fluff is on TV nobody cares.

  2. Trustworthy, unbiased, legitimate information…since when?
    I would consider the mainsteam media everything but.
    My dear Doug Collins, I find this op-piece of yours mostly hogwash. If traditional media collapses…let it happen I say!
    Smart people know the difference between “fake” and “real”…I do not need a frivolous scribbler telling me otherwise.

      Seriously, Pierre, you would prefer unaccountable citizen journalism to (admittedly flawed) mainstream media that at least operate under self-imposed codes of ethics?

      • No, of course not however the dissatisfaction with the mainstream media is at least as old as I am. The electronic era has brought us a breadth of good stuff and in a more convenient format…people like Collins are at a loss…and they should be, IMHO.
