More letters coming from business leaders in support of Ajax mine project, says KGHM

NEWS/ AJAX — More letters of support for Ajax like the one signed by 42 business leaders will be coming, says a spokesman for KGHM Ajax.

The letter, published in the Armchair Mayor News on Wednesday morning, is addressed to key municipal, provincial and federal politicians, and says the proposed mine would not only be good for the economy, but good for the lifestyle of Kamloops.

The letter was sent under the heading, ‘Kamloops Business Leaders for Ajax.’

Robert Koopmans, senior communications strategist for KGHM Ajax, said the letter resulted from an “ongoing” series of meetings with various members of the business community. He said the company has been asking business people to sign the letter, or letters like it.

More than 100 have signed so far, he said, but there are several hundred more business proprietors KGHM Ajax wants to solicit support from. The letter published Wednesday was “compiled” along with the businesses themselves, rather than simply being presented to them for signature, he said.

“It was more of a team effort.”

Some of the meetings have been with small groups of five or 10 people, some larger, he said. Typically, a Powerpoint presentation is made to the group, after which there’s a discussion, and then a request to sign a letter. A draft letter is distributed and feedback received over the next few days, then signatures requested.

Future letters might be similar or might vary from the first one, and some business owners want to write their own, he said.

“They are tired of hearing nothing but the voices of opponents,” Koopmans said. “We’re always seeking input from people. It’s important to us.”

The company hopes to eventually talk to the entire business community but “it’s a pretty big undertaking.”

Retired City chief administrative officer Randy Diehl said he signed the letter on the proviso that all environmental concerns about the proposed mine are met. He attended one of the meetings in April in which attendees were asked if they were satisfied with the communication process and whether they would be willing to sign a letter of support.

Diehl said he doesn’t oppose mining and as long as the project satisfies environmental issues he’s OK with it.

Kim Behrns, who also signed the letter, said he’s onside if Ajax passes all environmental criteria. “I certainly wouldn’t be in favour of it otherwise.”

Behrns acknowledged he works for KGHM Ajax on a contract basis, hosting minesite tours and helping with information sessions, but he’s not an employee. The meetings are being held “I think to show there are people in the community that are in favour of it.”

Among the others who signed are Kamloops Blazers co-owner Tom Gaglardi, Subway franchise owner Graydon Flanagan, and former Chamber of Commerce presidents Bob Dieno and Peter Aylen.

The letter states, in part, “Ajax can and will be developed in an environmentally responsible manner, following all provincial and federal regulations. Ongoing mointoring will ensure that the environment and health of the community are protected and maintained.”

Koopmans said the letter was “never intended for public release.”

The letter was addressed to Mayor Peter Milobar, the provincial and federal environment ministers, and B.C. Mines Minister Bill Bennett, with copies to various other politicians.

We all have a right to buy where we want to buy. However, to suggest that others should do the same thing is kind of interesting, because are we not denying people freedom of speech, whether one is for or against the project. Just to point out that C-51 is looming over the horizon.

I as well am using the names on the list to “exclude” them from my regular shopping routine, I will not support a business that comes out exclusively in support of this Mining Project…

I have the same thoughts when it comes to businesses that support political party’s, Mayoral candidates and Councillor candidates, although it is their right to do so, its also my right to chose whom I do business with, and I think its a bad practice to show whom you are in support of…. because we have the right as patrons to chose where we shop.

  3. Koopmans said the letter was “never intended for public release.”
One of KGHM Ajax’s public consultation objectives is “to share information between KGHM Ajax and the community and vice versa.”
The Proponent also professes to “refer to the following sources for guidance on public consultation requirements for the Ajax Mine Project:
1• Core Values of Public Participation
2• Code of Ethics for Public Participation
3• Stakeholder Engagement Good Practice Handbook

One of the principles in the 2• Code of Ethics for Public Participation is to encourage “the disclosure of all information relevant to the public’s understanding and evaluation of a decision.”
In the 3• Stakeholder Engagement Good Practice Handbook, the following five good practice principles of disclosure are listed:
    • Disclose early
    • Disclose objective information
    • Design disclosure to support consultation
    • Provide meaningful information
    • Ensure the accessibility of information

How would you rate KGHM Ajax in each of these tasks?

Interesting that Kim Behrns, one of the so-called businesses who signed the letter, is actually working for KGHM. This removes credibility in the letter and for the so-called support.

The form letter or anymore endorsement letters from business will do nothing for me except change my opinion from neutral on the mine to opposed. I have come to realize the mine proposal is not about the community, specially Aberdeen and Lower Sahali, as this venture will no doubt affect them adversely in spite of any environmental assessments that turn out to be positive. I cannot be convinced that a mine site so close to residential housing is a prudent undertaking. If anything I believe the dust, noise, and ground tremors will be at elevated levels as compared to what they are today. That doesn’t even factor in the accidents, the miscues, and any potential regulations that are broken in the spirit of productivity and efficiency.

I was admonished by a Aberdeen resident for my lack of compassion to the community. This person was right. I cannot understand why I came to a conclusion and disregarded the plight of the surrounding communities that will be affected. I will not change my opinion on this issue until someone can prove to me that these communities are in favour of the mine, and not by a 51% margin. It has to be an overwhelming response in my view. After all they have the most to lose.

With respect to our representatives…how could they let this happen in the first place. Why hasn’t the Mining Act been changed to prevent this. How can it be right to develop a mine so close to a city in this day and age. Even the town of Logan Lake is about 15 km’s from the mine, notwithstanding about 85% of the workers live in Kamloops.

There are old whores, new whores, and honest working whores than there are these consorts.

If this Cabal are Ajax supporters that that would be the clue for Kamloopsians to run away and not look back.

  8. That is not consistent with what I heard from my friend. I heard they were invited to sign the letter that was at the back of the room. Can you confirm this with attendees who did not sign?

Also, we should ask the company to share their economic impact study, since it appears they are touting it to business “leaders.” Good corporate citizens release info to the whole community, not the few that they have selected.

I heard Randy Diel talking to CFJC re this issue. He went on about the jobs and high incomes being spent in our community at length. If some othe high grossing citizens are alienated and leave the city, there will be losses, too. But the company never mentions that.

Also, if the peoole who are currently working at mines in camp actually get jobs here, as they hope, the net income level in Kamloops won’t change as much as people think. Heck, even if people currently making $70,000 per year here in Kamloops get jobs that bump them up to $100,000 that is only a $30,000 increase per job, not $100,000. I hope the consultants take all of this into account. If not, the report will have flaws.

This is an interesting analysis done by an economist for the proposed prosperity mine that outlines some of these issues with economic impact statements in much more detail – if you want some light reading:

Too bad their private letter of support has gone public at this time. Some of the business people who privately signed the letter of support must be a little ticked.
The actual polling of the for or against vote on Ajax can now begin, while we will not see the results, they should start to show up in daily sales records of businesses like Subway etc. The against vote maybe large…..as Wendy’s says ” YOU ARE LIVING LARGE MY FIREND”
Support of this nature normally is timed to be released during the official notice period of the review so it does not injure the pro side too much, just another amateur move by the people who are trying to run the project at Ajax ! (Does the next group of business owners, as per the current Ajax disclosure really want to go public with their position at this time given the obvious and unnecessary negative exposure to the present market place, I think not).

    • I believe that these letters are a way for Ajax to use “business leaders” who should know better and who forget that their businesses profit also from the everyday man who patronizes and spends his dollars. I am sure they will all survive without my business, but its a personal satisfaction to not leave my money at anyone’s business who signs these letters. I am sure that Vernon or Kelowna dealers will be happy to sell me that car, there are plenty of houses to choose from, and I am better off without fast food anyways, etc. etc. Raising the wages of so many who work for minimum wage would be a better way to show concern for the people’s lifestyle rather than supporting Ajax, which really will not benefit a whole lot more people than the few it will.

      • I haven’t shopped at Home Hardware ever since the owner was in a proAjax video. I used to buy things there on a regular basis.
