NEWS/ AIRPORT — The federal government will fund $4.4 million for a runway rehab at Kamloops Airport.

Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod announced the funding, which will pay for new pavement on runway 08-26 and the replacement of two runway sweepers, today (Friday).

The new equipment will be used for removal of snow, slush and ice from runways and taxiways.

Funding is provided through Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP). The grant will pay for 55 per cent of the repaving and equipment, while the rest will come from the City’s capital reserve.

“This work will ensure continued safe and efficient operation of the airport, while contributing to the economic and social well-being of the local community,” said McLeod.

Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar said the funding means the $10 airport improvement fees won’t increase, keeping costs down for travellers.

To date, through ACAP, the Kamloops Airport has received more than $8 million in funding for 13 safety projects, including today’s announcement.

Previous projects included the purchase of a firefighting vehicle and equipment; construction of a shelter for the firefighting vehicle and equipment; rehabilitation of pavement on taxiways A and B and selective work on apron 1; and the replacement of a snowplow truck and runway de-icing equipment.
