Public to get another look at plans for Columbia St. upgrade

NEWS/ CITY HALL —  The public will get another crack at the controversial Columbia Street upgrading project Wednesday night.

Columbia Street is slated for an upgrade.

Columbia Street is slated for an upgrade.

Columbia Street is slated for reconstruction in the summer of 2015. The plan involves widening the street between 3rd Avenue and 6th Avenue to provide designated left-turn lanes and new traffic signal infrastructure for the corridor.

The project also includes the closure of the left turn on Columbia Street at 2nd Avenue, which has proven one of the most contentious aspects of the plan.

An open house in February drew a crowd that packed into a tiny room at the Sandman Inn on Columbia Street like sardines. Wednesday, Nov. 26, the City will host another open house at the First Baptist Church (454 Columbia Street) to share the reconstruction plan.

Residents and business owners can drop by any time between 6 and 8 p.m. City staff will be available to answer questions.

The proposed road reconstruction plan will encompass structural road repairs, curbs, paving, addition of the left turns (widening), street lighting, sidewalk improvements, bus stop enhancements, centre medians, and traffic signal improvements.

The plan is available to view online at http://www.kamloops.ca/openhouse.

  1. Except for a few items, this looks like another Waste money project that will go way over budget. People have only themselves to blame for voting in the same basic group of fence sitters, and wastrels.

According to the data, the majority does not care one bit and at least half of the ones that voted, voted with their feet.
