Business as usual for four more years
EDITORIAL — The next four years will be interesting ones indeed around the Kamloops City council table. But how different will they be from what we’ve had?
One of the main features of the new council is the strengthening of the anti-Ajax voice, with the election of Dieter Dudy and Denis Walsh. Along with mine opponents Tina Lange and Donovan Cavers, the faction lined up against the mine proposal now totals four of the nine members of council.
That provides real strength to that side of the debate and will make it tougher for the remainder to ride the fence.
But other than that, was there much real change? Incumbent Nelly Dever was a somewhat surprising loss in what is otherwise a minor shuffle, a victim, perhaps, of her strident support of a significant pay raise for councillors.
And, Nancy Bepple, who resigned earlier in the year due to health reasons, then ran again, was nowhere close to regaining her seat.
Otherwise, this is a status quo council. The voters, rather than opting for a major shuffle, played it conservatively. Seven incumbents, including Mayor Peter Milobar, are back. Veteran Pat Wallace, talked about as a possible casualty, came in eighth and retains a seat at the table.
Dudy is the only new blood on this council, placing a strong third. But he’s familiar to voters after nearly unseating Milobar three years ago, and hails from the business community.
Truly new blood is nowhere to be seen. People like Mike O’Reilly, Dustin McIntyre, Peter Kerek and Andrew Miller finished far down the list of 28 candidates. Any one of them would have added fresh, younger luster to the council, though some might argue how positive that change would have been.
Bottom line, though, is that the new council — with the possible exception of the Ajax issue — represents business as usual for the next four years.

Interesting …based on the information from the City of Kamloops unofficial election results from 2011 to yesterday. I think Arjun Singh was the real winner. This year he moved up to 2nd place in the votes from 5th place in 2011… Almost a 2 % increase in popular vote. Pat Wallace was 8th …this year compared to 4th in 2011 she had almost the identical number of votes….2011-7461 votes …2014-7483 votes. It was to nice to see about a 3% increase in voter turn out.
Yes it’s business as usual in Kamloops civic council. It’s like the definition of “insanity”….doing the same things over and over again and looking for a different result.
The voters of Kamloops got what they voted for.
For what it’s worth.

The fact that Pat Wallace is still there is unbelievable. It is one of the reasons we need term limits. No surprise about Milobar, he had no serious contenders. Am sorry that there weren’t a couple of new ones to the political arena elected.

Status quo or not, all the candidates should be congratulated on a good election. Despite the Ajax issue, the folks who got elected are all very good people and have served the community well.

it will be interesting to see the dynamics created by the addition of Dudy and Walsh. I am disappointed that Council has skewed to being male dominated as we had some strong female candidates. I hope the women are not too discouraged. and will continue to grow their voice in the city.

I doubt it will discourage women. For the past few years we have had female dominated councils including the previous one.

I must say – I am just so disappointed that Pat Wallace was elected again. I would prefer to see pretty well any other candidate at the table. I am happy that Dudy and Walsh have been elected though. They have much to offer and will advocate for the things I believe in.

I’d agree Carol. Nothing against Pat, but shes making a career out of being a council-woman. I would imagine in the next 4 years she may finally have had enough.
