Travel brings out the best in people

KamloopsTravelClubEDITOR’S NOTE: The Armchair Mayor News is pleased to welcome our newest contributor, James Gjaltema. James is with the Kamloops Travel Club as well as being an associate with the Flight Centre. He’ll provide travel tips and ideas on a regular basis.

COLUMN/ TRAVEL — My name is James and I’m addicted to travel.

Travel provides opportunities to relax, be active, learn, grow, connect and live life to the fullest. I love exploration, discovery and experiencing foreign cultures. I have been in the travel and tourism industry for 20 years, doing what I love – travelling the world. I will be writing regular travel articles with the goal of providing inspiration, tips and specific travel deals.

Gjaltema, JamesOne of the great things about travel is that it can bring out the best in people. Often, when we are travelling, we forget our everyday stresses and can live in the moment. We are happy. We are better able to appreciate the beauty in the world. The world is an amazing place full of natural wonders, interesting people, unique foods, impressive history and so many things to do.

Connecting with people and sharing experiences is a joy. I have met many lifelong friends in my travels. The best conversations I have are often with people who are well traveled; they have a wealth of life experiences and have seen so many interesting things.

A great way to connect with other travelers in the area is the Kamloops Travel Club, an informal group of people who get together regularly to talk about travel. There are no fees or memberships, just casual meetings of like-minded individuals.

The Kamloops Travel Club will meet at 7 p.m. on July 24 at a downtown apartment complex. We will have a projector to share pictures and videos of trips. We’ll talk about trip ideas, travel resources and travel deals. If you are interested in attending please call me at 250-879-0873.

Future travel articles will follow a theme and provide related specific trip ideas. Everybody has different circumstances and tastes. It is rare that one of the trip ideas is a perfect fit, but travel agents are great at customizing trips to your situation.

There is a misconception among some that using a travel agent costs more than booking on-line yourself. I work with clients to ensure that they are getting the best value, and can almost always get prices that are as good as or better than on any web-site. I recommend forming a relationship with a travel agent that you trust and working together to find travel solutions.

As promised, I have included some travel ideas to inspire you. The theme is longer trips.
