‘I don’t want to envision 15 hot dog stands’

NEWS — There will be plenty of food for thought at an upcoming public hearing.

City council voted today to send a proposal for expanding the use of food trucks in the city, particularly in the downtown core. The hearing will look at some tweaking to zoning bylaws, and a pilot project is also proposed that would allow food trucks at two locations downtown — near the Paramount Theatre and another at Gaglardi Square.

Much of today’s discussion centred around the kind of food that will be offered, and the impact on local restaurants. Council was assured the intention is that food be prepared on the trucks rather than being pre-packaged but Mayor Peter Milobar told staff to be sure of the details, since if patrons aren’t allowed to buy a can of pop with their food it will be a problem.

Coun. Ken Christian was also concerned about the menu. “I don’t want to envision 15 hot dog stands all in a row,” he said.

The hearing date will be set later.

  1. I’m excited to see food trucks at the farmer’s market. If they’re allowed to set up a couple tables & chairs, it would be so much easier to sit down at those after bringing in a haul of local produce, than towing it into some of the permanent eateries downtown.

And I agree with one of the commenters above – I don’t think there are 15 hot dog vendors in Kamloops. There may be 2 or 3, max., and they have their haunts pretty well established already.

No hot dogs stands allowed. Craft food only, grown with love, prepared with love.
