Nancy Bepple resigns from City council due to health reasons, no by-election to be held
NEWS/ CITY HALL — Coun. Nancy Bepple’s has resigned from City council due to health reasons.
Mayor Peter Milobar made the announcement at today’s council meeting, saying Bepple’s presence on council “will definitely be missed. She had the courage of her convictions.”
Bepple has missed several meetings during the past couple of months due to poor health but she had indicated her intention to run again in this November’s civic election, and today’s revelation was a surprise.
Council voted not to hold a byelectiion to fill the vacancy, since the next general election is in only a few months.
“Nancy really did a good job of service to this city,” said Coun. Marg Spina in making the motion not to hold a byelection. “I believe we can carry forward without a byelection.”
She said a byelection would be costly and the remaining eight members of council can “pick up the work and carry on.”
My husband and I were so sorry to read of Nancy Bepple’s leave-taking! Nancy has always been a favourite councilor of ours, we can always count on her for thoughtful well-researched comments especially on social justice issues, and “green” thinking. We will miss you, Nancy, and we’re hoping your health concerns improve.
