ROTHENBURGER – Speculation underway about the mayoral ballot

(Image: Mel Rothenburger)

AND SO IT BEGINS. Names are starting to firm up, ever so slightly, as possible contenders for the mayoralty in this fall’s civic election.

The only two for-sures at this point continue to be incumbent Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson and Coun. Mike O’Reilly, but some others are in the rumour mill for us to ponder, thanks to a combination of word on the street and a few who might be considered “insiders.” Of course, “insiders” — some of whom actually know something and some who just think they know — are frequently proven wrong.

We won’t really be able to firm things up until hopefuls indicate their intentions, which they aren’t going to do until official-announcement day.

So I hope anyone I mention here won’t take offence, and you can take the following any way you wish but it currently looks like this. Coun. Katie Neustaeter has long been considered to have ambitions for the mayoralty, but her star has been dimmed by the various controversies she’s been involved in around the council table.

When O’Reilly got out in front of the pack, one might have assumed Neustaeter would be further discouraged. There was, after all, method to O’Reilly’s early declaration. Yet there’s talk going around that she hasn’t ruled it out.

No doubt, Hamer-Jackson will be a happy man if she goes after his job. Why? Because two of the most prominent council members — she and O’Reilly — would probably draw votes from one another, giving the current mayor a definite boost.

Others on the list are Dieter Dudy, Nancy Bepple and Christopher Foulds. Dudy has made it no secret he’d like to get back on council. The only question is whether he thinks he’d have a legitimate shot at the mayoralty, which he’s tried for twice before, losing to Peter Milobar and Hamer-Jackson.

Bepple is said to be getting some encouragement to run but she’d be better trying to hang on to her councillor seat which, in itself, is no sure thing. She’d be an unlikely mayoral candidate so we can probably cross her off the list for now.

Foulds is an interesting rumour. At least one newspaper editor I know has served as mayor in the past; could another one make it? Foulds, though, has no civic experience or current profile.

So at this point, the slate — if the prognosticators have it right — comes down to two unpopular City councillors, a twice defeated candidate, a journalist with modest name recognition, and the most controversial incumbent mayor in the City’s history. Interesting choice.

But this raises a fascinating scenario for the rest of council. Should both O’Reilly and Neustaetor run, it would create at least two vacancies for councillors. And, surely, Bill Sarai won’t be bold enough to run again. There are others on the incumbent council who should call it a day, too, but Sarai especially has no business being on council after his Tapegate scandal and should have resigned a year ago. He should certainly be too embarrassed to put his name on the ballot again.

So, let’s make that three vacancies; no maybe four, since at least one of the other incumbents may well decide being on the council hasn’t been the bed of roses he or she thought it would be.

And although incumbents usually have an advantage, being an incumbent this time could actually be a significant disadvantage. This council hasn’t exactly endeared itself to electors. So, what if at least one or two of them are defeated? Major turnover.

And that could mean a serious change of approach around the council chambers. Hopefully, one with a lot more teamwork and civility than has been the case these past three plus years.

  1. If McCorkle earns $302,400 a year, that’s $1,163 PER DAY assuming 260 work days a year and not including any vacation days he doesn’t work. $25,578 per month. Per month.

That is elite level salary. Top 1%. Probably top .5% of individual earners in the entire nation. For being a manager in Kamloops. For someone that got the in-person meeting cameras turned away so he’s out of frame.

    Obscene.

  2. Great quote from McCorkle today in Castanet. “CAOs are paid what CAOs are paid. I didn’t negotiate the number, it was offered, and it’s in comparison to every other CAO.” It is absolutely wild that the municipality didn’t even bother to negotiate an excluded position. That kind of says it all right there. They don’t even care enough to negotiate an obscene salary paid by your tax dollars.

I can’t fault McCorkle for taking the job and pay. But there’s no way on God’s green earth than anyone, McCorkle or otherwise, can justify a salary way higher than prominent positions like Prime Ministers and Premiers.

It’s insane that people make this amount of money and something needs to be done to bring these dollars back down to earth.

From what I can find out, Byron McCorkell’s pay in 2024 (the most recent available) was $302,400. In that year, Justin Trudeau received $406,200, and Mark Carney will get the same amount in 2025. David Eby received $227,111 in 2024.

      • I have seen people claiming he took over $400K. Something about taking on dual roles after Trawin departed when his feelings were hurt. If he didn’t take the higher figure then I stand corrected.

But even if the $300K is true, there’s no way he “earns” a salary higher than the person running the entire province of B.C. Now go down the line of salaries for war generals, MLAs, MPs etc. It’s a lot more. Ministers.

$300K for a municipal manager is obscene.

      • The first 2 months he was paid at a lower paying assistant CAO position then as an acting CAO position, his 2025 salary will be over $325,000 which puts him much closer to Vancouvers CAO than Vernons.

Can someone explain to me how the Kamloops city manager position is closer related to Vancouver’s than the Vernon city manager position?

  3. the notion that RHJ could get a second term is outrageous. Does anyone really think he would/could be different with a new set of faces. Not a chance!!! We have to get out en Massé to make sure that does not happen

    • On second thought I would be happy to see an incumbent councillor get the Mayor role. But then face down a majority of new councillors willing to challenge the status quo and implement the real Mayor’s platform. See what it’s like on the other end.

Reid is the only one looking out for the taxpayer. He can’t even get the catered meals for council and management ended due to not even getting a seconder.

  4. Imagine Nancy Bepple as Mayor? Yikes. The staccato ramblings are already too much to sit though from the council seat. Kamloops is also already too friendly to the homeless and drug industry. A vote for Bepple is a vote for woke silliness like her Gaza Strip motion (we are still waiting on that one, Nancy).

Katie likely wouldn’t be successful due to lack of performance on a number of issues and her legal expense history. Many on council ran on promises of addressing crime and homelessness the proceeded to do morning, or worse yet – vote for wet shelters in neighborhoods. Katie has some capability with PR spin but it’s not helpful. We need substance not media relations.

O’Reily might have a chance but he’s not good for the city. He is a champion for AAP and a profligate spender of tax dollars. He is also out of touch.

Sarai is a liar and doesn’t ever deserve to hold a seat at the helm, much less a seat on council. His judgment is severely compromised and Kamloops simply deserves better than the “snake” man. His shenanigans would have caused even the most entitled and oblivious among us to resign, yet there he remains.

I think the real Mayor has a shot. I would like to see a majority roster of councillors ready to stand up for the taxpayer and put an end to the nonsense down at city hall, and curtail the outrageous spending and salaries in administration.

One thing is certain – the current council is the sorriest example of leadership seen in a generation. Songs will be sung about their legendary failures and nonsense. Your children’s children will hear stories of their infamy, and scare each other will tales of AAPs ran roughshod over the city, of tape recorders secretly recording the whispers and fires being set across the city while they voted for more wet drug dens.

If I recall correctly Christopher Foulds never wrote anything critical of City Hall, leaving that job instead to Dale Bass. Then when the chance came to rectify all that was wrong what did Dale Bass do?
