CITY COUNCIL – Pilot project to allow drinking in Riverside bandshell area

Jamming in the park. Liquor will soon be allowed in the bandshell area at certain times.

Residents of age will be able to enjoy a wine or brewski at the Riverside Park Bandshell grounds this summer. City council today (June 10, 2025) approved moving forward on a pilot project that will kick in later this month and run until October, noon to nine.

If it becomes permanent, the season will run from May 15 to Oct. 1. A report from staff noted that several other cities, including Kelowna, Penticton, Vancouver and Chilliwack, already allow “responsible consumption ” in designated areas.

The policy covers only alcohol, not other drugs. The plan applies to BYOB drinks such as wine from local wineries and the hope is that gradual public awareness and acceptance would build over time.

“The area around the Rotary Bandshell in Riverside Park is the most suitable area for this pilot due to its proximity to high-density neighbourhoods; access and visibility for residents, City staff, and security personnel; higher frequency of event programming; and alignment of park usage trends with responsible consumption activities, such as picnicking and attending Music in the Park,” the report said, adding the new policy will support social well-being.

Signage will identify the designated area, and existing laws on intoxication will apply.

The pilot is subject to a bylaw change; council unanimously approved the first reading.

  1. Alcohol (booze) is still responsible for the majority of social ills, family problems and addiction.  Yet, there seems to be a notion that a far more enjoyable experience of Music in the Park can be had if folks have access to drinking.  Of course, what example does it set for those who are younger and have come to join parents as a family time in a park?

Meanwhile, “illicit” drugs are scorned because it has become so easy to see the control opioids have on people.  Is it typical for a body elected for governance (thanks Mr. Councillor) to have double standards?

Having drinking allowed in Riverside Park is not a positive step.  I, like others, gave up drinking (booze) a long time ago (47 years) and haven’t missed it.
